Every year it seems germs and viruses become a hot topic for a short while and are then forgotten. But basic cleaning and hygiene should remain in effect year round. It’s interesting to note that many people don’t know the difference in cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. We hope to explain the differences so that you can better understand the products you’re buying and using.
Cleaning should be the very first step in your regimen regardless of what products you’re using to clean with. Without this step, sanitizing or disinfecting are not as effective. According to EPA.gov and their ECE Curriculum cleaning physically removes dirt and grime that make it possible for germs, bacteria, and viruses to thrive. This could be seen as a “primer” for your sanitizing or disinfecting solution to work on afterwards.
Now we move on to the two that most often get confused. Disinfecting and sanitizing are often used interchangeably but have different meanings. Knowing the difference is very important depending on what or why you are cleaning.
Sanitizing is the next step up in cleaning. The article “Disinfecting vs. Sanitizing” on HowStuffWorks.com explains that sanitizing is a chemical process that reduces and even kills germs on surfaces to make them safe for contact. Typically areas that come into contact with food should be sanitized, such as kitchens.
Disinfecting requires a stronger solution to destroy germs rather than simply reduce them. To get a better idea think of the healthcare industry. Hospitals disinfect areas that have come into contact with blood or body fluids or when the highest standards of “cleaning” should be done.
This is not to be taken as the only guide to cleaning for these needs so it's important to do research on how to best clean for your specific needs and surfaces. Everyone's cleaning needs and regimen are different and the most important thing to remember is to keep things hygienic and sanitary for your safety and others.
