The flu virus, or influenza, is a respiratory illness that results in over 31 million outpatient doctor visits each year. The CDC estimates 17 million work days are lost because of the flu each year. But by following some practical tips we can all help lower the chances of the flu spreading in our home and work environment.
1. Wash your hands regularly in warm soapy water. This may seem like common sense but many people disregard this key element to cold and flu prevention.
2. Viruses can live up to 48 hours on hard surfaces so it's important to use disinfecting cleaners regularly. Clean toys, doorknobs, light switches and anything else that could be considered a high touch item should be sprayed or wiped with a disinfecting cleaner regularly.
3. Use antibacterial wipes or disinfectant spray on your keyboard, phone and pens to avoid spreading germs at work.
4. Clean frequently-used areas. In addition to light switches and door knobs this can also include cabinet handles, fridge handles, printers, copiers and even your phone.
5. Wash towels and bedding in hot water with a laundry disinfectant. Especially if someone has been sick in the home.
